Gotcha Day

Yesterday we attempted to celebrate Gotcha Day. We decided to make our Gotcha Day for both kids the first Saturday in November since both kids were/will be adopted around that time. Things didn't quite go as planned though.

Mainly because we didn't really have much planned. When I picked Marcus up from day care on Friday he was a nice coughing and sneezing snotty mess. I had hoped to go to Rainy Day Play Center, and indoor play area that is just tons of fun. However, I was not prepared to deal with all the mean looks from the other moms there while my kid sneezed and wiped boogers on their kid. We thought about hitting up the aviary as well but figured Marcus really wouldn't be able to pick out the birds yet and would be bored. Then there was the whole fact that Marcus didn't get out of bed until 9:30 and I didn't really feel like taking a shower or getting out of my pj's.

We watched the video that we took on our visit trip back in September of '06, the first time we met Marcus. It was hilarious! He was such a... well... a baby! I guess that is what a 5-1/2-month-old person is though. Greg and I were laughing at Marcus's expression the first time we held him. He still gives us that same look today. You know the one that say, "You guys are weird!"

In the afternoon we went for a little hike. In a community newsletter we read about a Boy Scout who did a community enrichment project and created a hiking trail about a mile from our house. We packed up the kids (Marcus and the pooch) and decided to check it out. I love to hike, but particularly love it in the fall when you get to enjoy the smell of the fallen leaves and hear the sound of the leaves crunching under your feet. We were hoping that Marcus would want to experience the fun of hiking through the leaves but he was much happier in my arms. The trail was a quarter mile, then a quarter mile back. Nice and short, but a little more work while carrying a toddler the entire way.

There is a big soccer field between the trail head and our car and Marcus wanted down when we hit that spot. Then he just stood there. Greg and the pooch and I tried to lure him by walking away but he wouldn't be fooled. Greg had an idea. Since our pooch's neck is slightly larger than our son's waist, her collar fits nicely around Marcus like a belt. Also, since our pooch doesn't wander off, heels, and comes when she is called and our toddler does not, it seemed logical to put the collar and leash on Marcus instead of the dog. No clue why this worked, but as soon as Marcus was leashed, he was ready to go. We have a 15 ft retractable leash and Greg didn't even have to do any tugging to get him to move. Marcus just followed Daddy right to the car like a little lost puppy dog!

(Despite my pleas to the mailbox gnomes just before checking inside yesterday, there still weren't any second DNA results in there. There is always tomorrow.)
