There's Something Happening Here

There's something happening here. What it is ain't exactly clear. There's a kid in a crib over there, tellin' me his momma ain't fair. Or something like that... Marcus knows that something is up around this house of ours. He just can't quite figure out what it is. The problem is that he refuses to rest - or at least nap - until knows what is going on.

Today we followed all the same routine. I put him down for his afternoon nap, a nap that can last anywhere from 1.5-3.5 hours if I let him sleep that long. After 1 hour and 45 minutes of him babbling/crying/screaming/singing/whining, he finally fell asleep. Being the evil mom that I am, when his typical napping time was over (and he had slept for nearly 2 hours by that point) I woke him up. This isn't the first time he has decided not to nap. Nope. But it is the second time. It is a new thing. It started yesterday.

Yesterday we had a play date planned. It was a simple play date since it was at our house so it really didn't require us to do much else than open the door and let the people in. When Jen and Finn arrived at 1:15 (an hour and 45 minutes after I put Marcus down for his nap), Marcus was still in his room babbling away. We had guests so out of bed he came. He was quite dazed and subdued which was actually a welcome change to his typical toddler behavior. Marcus observed Finn (and Jen) for a little while. Then Marcus decided that Finn was better off not playing with any of his toys. Marcus tried to hoard them but quickly ran out of hands and gave up. Besides, Finn was more interested in playing and climbing on the pooch to have much interest in Marcus's toys.

Marcus decided that some Baby Einstein would be a good idea. We hadn't watched it for a really long time so I popped it in. Marcus and Finn were engrossed, for about 10 seconds.

Cara and Max showed up and more playing took place. Marcus was really dragging without his nap but he wasn't cranky so that was a bonus. I had a good time catching up with Jen and Cara and being reminded of what kids younger than Marcus are like. For some reason, I think that might come in handy in the next few days...

After Jen and Cara left, we settled down for some dinner. Greg and I couldn't stop laughing at Marcus who we knew had no chance of making it through dinner. He was trying so hard and even resorted to eating with his eyes closed. The exhaustion gave in though.

That is a bread stick hanging out of his mouth in case you were wondering. He was in mid bite when he just couldn't hang on to the world of the conscious any longer.

He was so tired I was able to clean him off, remove the bread stick from his mouth, and take him out of his highchair and into his bed without him ever waking up. That was at 5:30 last night.

About an hour after that he did wake up a bit confused. We got him bathed and gave him a snack and back into bed he went. And instantly into the dream world he went again until 7:30 this morning.

Since Marcus spent a hour and 45 minutes not napping this afternoon and another almost 2 hours hours actually napping, it gave Greg and me lots of time to get things ready for our trip. For some reason we have been procrastinating doing it. I would imagine that it is mainly because we knew we still had lots of time to get it done. I much preferred the way our pickup trip for Marcus went. We only had 36 hours to get ready so we just did it. This time there was just too much time to think about it. However, our bags are mostly packed now, we have just about everything set up for the grandmothers (they will be arriving tomorrow), and we even have our plans ready to go for our day trip to Antigua. I'm definitely ready to get this little boy of ours in my arms forever!
